Big Rock Falls |
Passing through the jungle and into the Vaca Plateau area of the Mountain Pine Ridge, you will reach Big Rock Falls, an impressive 60-foot waterfall and pools. Part of Privassion Creek which gets its start high in the Maya Mountains, Big Rock Falls is an outstanding location for a swim or, for the more adventurous, cliff diving. Two large, deep emerald pools fill with the spring water that rushes over the waterfall above and invite you to plunge in. Granite outcroppings can be climbed in several areas and the deepness of the pools here allows for diving and jumping in. The footpath down to the falls is a fifteen-minute hike and involves some difficult and steep climbing (down at first and up on the way back). Once to the water, you must walk over the large slabs of not-so-flat and sometimes slippery granite for 75 yards or so before reaching the lower of the two pools. |
| Approximate Drive Time: 45 minutes |
| Adventure Level: Strenuous. The drive is bumpy on unpaved road the entire way, and the hike down to the falls can make even a fit person's thighs sore the next day. Although the swimming is easy, you must be able to climb steep uneven steps in the dirt and be able to pull yourself in and out of shallow water. |
| This Adventure is available as a package with Barton Creek Cave Canoeing, Caracol, or Rio Frio Cave. |
