After passing through
several of the local towns and driving up into the lush primary growth
jungle of the Vaca Plateau, you will reach Chechem Ha Cave, which
means "Cave of the Poisonwood."
This cave, which was discovered by the local land owners and their
dog a number of years ago, is a Mayan burial cave with artifacts that
date back two millennia. A variety of ancient pots and a stela used
for ceremonial purposes can be viewed up close, and visitors are surprised
by the end of the cave which opens up into a cathedral-like cavern
where Mayan ceremonies were once held. |
