St.
Herman's Cave |
Located in the Blue Hole National Park and on the other side of the hill from the Blue Hole itself is St. Herman's Cave, once inhabited by the Maya. A mile and a half long trail over rugged and sometimes steep ground leads to the first of three entrances to the cave, which is actually a huge sinkhole measuring nearly 200 feet across. This funnels down about 65 feet at the cave's lip, and concrete steps laid over the Maya originals aid explorers who wish to descend. Although no challenge to the advanced spelunker, neophytes can easily and safely explore the cave for at least a mile. Pottery, spears, and the remains of torches have been found in many caves in the area. With your guide, you can also explore part of another cave system here, the Crystal Cave (sometimes called the Crystalline Cave), which stretches for miles. The Blue Hole National Park is also home to the Inland Blue Hole, which can be visited at the same time you are at St. Herman's Cave (for more on Inland Blue Hole, click on its link) |
| Approximate Drive Time: 2 Hours on a smooth, paved highway |
| Adventure Level: Moderate to Strenuous. The hike to the cave itself is for those who are a bit more on the fit side, and depending on far you want to venture in, the maneuvering within the cave can be tricky at times.
