Tikal, Guatemala

The Tikal ("Place of Voices") ruins, in the Petén District of Guatemala, are among the most famous in the world. Rivaling the ruins of Caracol in Western Belize, they have been extensively excavated and restored, with work having begun here in 1848. With more than 3,000 structures, 10,000 foundations, and covering six square miles, Tikal is a treasure trove of Mayan culture and history.

Be sure to have your camera batteries fully charged and a fresh memory card available, as not only the architecture itself, but the surrounding jungle and wildlife, will keep you snapping photos all day long. Be ready for a very long day on this adventure, as once you get to the border of Belize and cross into Guatemala, you have a pothole filled drive of nearly 2 hours ahead of you.

* Please note that the price of this adventure does not include the US$16.25 Belize Departure Tax, which must be paid when crossing the border into Guatemala.

Approximate Drive Time: 3 hours, plus Border Crossing
Adventure Level: Strenuous. This is a long drive and a long day with loads of walking, and for those who are not afraid of heights, lots of climbing to the tops of ruins.
